What are RSS feeds?

Seth Sutel, an AP Business Writer wrote a recent article titled, “What are RSS Feeds on the Internet and How Can I Use Them?” Most of our readers are already familiar with RSS, but not everyone is using them. If you are not, please read this article, and then move to step 2 - implementation.

RSS is becoming a common means of consuming information for many people. By providing this alternate channel of communication, you are recognizing the varying preferences of your customers and satisfying them. Furthermore, you are increasing the likelihood that your message will be read.

Weather, stock quotes, news, press releases, blog posts, concert schedules, the list goes on. Information such as this can be delivered via RSS and organized into a convenient and easy-to-use RSS aggregator like MyYahoo, Google, and Bloglines.

That way you don’t have to go out and get the information, “RSS brings the Web to you.”

I’ve notice some people have the RSS sign on their pages of their favorite blogs. Example: http://mylifeinreno.wordpress.com has it next to his favorites showing what the article is about.

How is that done? I’m not computer savvy but trying to learn as much as possible. I’ve tried to get the same with no luck?

Nevada Girl, from the looks of your blog you are using wordpress, and you actually have the RSS icon on your sidebar already. However, it links to your brother’s blog. First, go to Feedburner.com, and burn your blog there. They will give you a feedburner url, which you can then reference the RSS icon to. Go into the site admin for wordpress, select presentation, theme editor, and then select the Sidebar. Find where it says, My Life in Reno, and then look for the RSS image src. Reference the feedburner url instead of your brother’s blog. Put you brother under Favorite Links. Change My Life in Reno to Subscribe to my Feed, or something like that. Also, I would move the RSS icon closer to the top, so it is easier for people to find. One more thing: If you have not yet submitted your blog to Technorati I would recommend doing so. That way it will be searchable in one of the largest blog search engines. Hope this helps!
