Tumblr Inspired Quick Post Wordpress Plugin
NOTE: Support for this Plugin has been discontinued. Wordpress.org has decided to implement this functionality into the core of WordPress 2.6. I can’t wait to try it. You can read about it here: http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/6813
Inspired by the tumblr.com’s bookmarklet which allows users to quickly and easily post to their Tumblr blog, I have created a plugin that will allow you to quickly post text, images, photos, quotes, and videos to your Wordpress implementation.
NOTE: This project is now maintained and distributed here - However, feel free to comment with any issues, ideas or questions below.

Cool plug, and a great idea. Further development planned? If so, there is a YouTube bug - when using the bookmarklet from a YouTube page, the post window pops open to ‘Video’ but the ‘embed’ field is absent and replaced by an image. The resulting post body is the URL text only (not clickable) of the YouTube page.
There are kludges around it of course — but there it is, for what it’s worth. Again, great plug.
July 25th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
smokestack,
I’ll look into it. The idea on Youtube.com is that you don’t need to paste the embed code, I can grab it off the page. For that reason, I show a thumbnail of the youtube video and leave the post box so you can add your own message.
July 25th, 2007 at 1:34 pm

Any idea why after about 24 hours of happily using Quick Post, I am now getting the following error when I click on “Create Post”?
I’m using the latest version of firefox in both Windows XP Professional and Mac OSX 10.4.x. I get the same error in both windows and mac os.

Quick update on the issue. It seems to be an issue when posting under links/text. I just posted a youtube just fine. There is also another issue that I mentioned here, which may be my theme and may be quickpost.

Ben,
This appears to be a Apache security setting. Check out this post for a detailed explanation. It seems like rewording your post may help get the post published or changing your .htaccess file - although that may put you at a security risk.
August 1st, 2007 at 9:17 am
Interesting. The text/link posts that have failed have tended to be minimal amounts of hyperlinked text, such as this one, which I posted via the back end wysiwyg interface. I’ll try bouncing the apache issue off of a friend of mine who is a pretty hight test systems admin, and I’ll look into the .htaccess file option, keeping in mind the possible security risks. Thanks!
August 1st, 2007 at 11:35 am
I’ve successfully posted a link from the Quick Post interface, so you seem to be correct that the error is content specific and that it is likely the the apache security setting. Thanks for the quick response to my quick post question.

Hi!, great plugin. I’m working on tumblrize my blog template and this fits it very nicely.
You should add somehing just like this (only with the option to upload a picture instead of selecting it… for obvious reasons) to the write admin page. Take a look at http://codex.wordpress.org/Adding_Administration_Menus to know how to add it, I think it’s just a matter of doing a few prints in a function and you should be set (not sure about the uploading thing though)
Another request: make default categories selectable for type of post =)

One thing I’m wondering is, can you set the plugin up so that it doesn’t use a WYSIWYG editor? I’m just testing out the plugin and posting a link it makes the text purple and adds all sorts of spans into it. I don’t really want that, as it means I have to go and edit the post, defeating the object of the quick post.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
Phil, that sounds like a great feature request for the preferences panel. I will integrate that into my next release. BTW, which browser are you using that causes this wierdness?
August 28th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
Josh, thanks for letting me know you’re working on fixing it in IE. I’d love to help out by testing it if you need it.
August 29th, 2007 at 1:18 am

When you make a photo, does it hotlink to it, or does it upload it to the WordPress install?
August 31st, 2007 at 7:25 am
When you add a photo, it links to the image src where the image is hosted. It doesn’t copy it over to wordpress.
September 4th, 2007 at 5:50 pm
That kinda sucks. Hotlinking is never cool.
September 5th, 2007 at 7:49 am
I took that tack because that is what Tumblr does. I think it’s less “sucky” because the intent is to quickly get your reader over to site who you are hotlinking. If you goal isn’t to get the reader over there as soon as possible, then you should not hotlink.
September 5th, 2007 at 11:45 pm
What a brilliant plugin. It’s a great complement to my stumbling addiction.
I never liked the idea of splitting off part of my blogging life into yet another third party service, so this plugin is a great solution.
BTW, Stumbleupon users hotlink images as well and it’s even encouraged.

I am aware of this error. It occurs when the page you are trying to quickpost has too many images on it. I’m trying to work on a solution for this.
September 28th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
After upgrading to Wordpress 2.3 I have a couple of questions/issues.
Firstly when I call up the QuickPost window I have an error at the top and my categories are not displayed. The error is:
WordPress database error: [Table 'electr_phil.wp_categories' doesn't exist]
SELECT cat_ID,cat_name FROM wp_categories ORDER BY cat_name
I don’t if this is something that happens for everyone or if something on my blog has broken.
Secondly, would it be possible to have a tag input field in the quickpost window so that we can add tags there and then?
September 29th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

October 9th, 2007 at 8:54 am
I’m trying to find time to update my WP install to 2.3 and then fix the plugin. Sorry for the delay.
October 9th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Hey, I was very excited to start using this plugin, buuut, it only lets me post tumbles to parent categories. My tumble category is a “child” of another category and as a result it doesn’t show up on the configuration page. Any chance of you tweaking it so that we can set it to post to any of the categories on a site?
October 9th, 2007 at 10:58 pm
FEATURE REQUEST: to be able to post without adding code to the content.
For regular WP installs, your code adds the Tumblelog look and feel. But for themes that are specially designed as WP tumblelog implementations, with their own stylings for each content type, conflicts occur. See, for example, what quotes look like on T1, the theme I’m currently using, and what they look like when I post them with QuickPost. See what I’m talking about? Thanks. I love this plugin.
October 10th, 2007 at 7:25 am
Josh: Thanks for the update—I look forward to seeing if I can get this working!
October 25th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
Brian: Something I think I requested somewhere, as possible enhancements, are precisely that styles are customizable. That way they can be integrated better in the existing layout.
October 28th, 2007 at 4:12 pm
Hey how about having the option of adding tags too ?
November 12th, 2007 at 11:56 am
Have you had any luck getting this working on 2.3? I just discovered this plugin today and it looks very useful.
November 12th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
Todd,
Should be working good in 2.3. It doesn’t support tags yet but categories are good to go.
November 15th, 2007 at 8:50 am
I am setting up a new Wordpress 2.3.1 site and just installed this plug-in (version .5). I see an item in the release notes about a bug with flickr fixed, but it doesn’t work with flickr. It returns the following error: Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource /wp-content/plugins/quickpost/quickpost.php could not be found on this server.
Other sites seem to work though and this is a nice plug-in. However, flickr is one of my main sites.
Thanks much. Just wanted to let you know.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:33 pm
Really like this. Simple quick and effective.
It would be nice to see it include some tagging options - just for the default related posts activity. Nice work though.
November 23rd, 2007 at 1:04 am
This is great! Thanks for putting so much thought into this plugin - it seems intensive! I’ve got a couple bugs on WP2.3 and QP0.5: text entered under “source” on a Quote-style post appears within the BLOCKQUOTE tag, which seems counter-intuitive, and the Photo-post tab is just broken. Clicking on it loads a blank page with all the photos on the page, clicking on a photo loads the photo’s URL into the QP pop-up, if that all makes sense. This is in Camino & Safari.
The good news is, I fixed the BLOCKQUOTE issue. Edited the quickpost.php file by just moving one line around and it seems to work perfectly. Here’s the relevant code; search to find it:
switch($_REQUEST['post_type']){
case “regular”:
$content = $_REQUEST['content'];
if ($_REQUEST['content2']) {
$content = $content .”" .$_REQUEST['content2'];
}
break;
case “quote”:
$content = “
“;
$content = $content .”" .$_REQUEST['content2'];
}
break;

November 26th, 2007 at 8:06 am
Somerville,
Thanks. I’ve incorporated it into the trunk. It will be part of the next release.
November 30th, 2007 at 2:40 am
Hi!
Lovely addon for Wordpress!
Version 0.5 worked like a charm until Apple decided to release their new browser version. Seems Safari 3 screws up the photo quick posts…
December 4th, 2007 at 6:28 pm
Good news. I’ve uploaded a new version to wordpress.org that fixes the safari photos issue. I’ve also added the blockquote fix submitted by somerville and a few minor bug fixes.
December 4th, 2007 at 11:06 pm
This plugin would be damn near perfect for me if it included the text area to provide tags for the post. As it stands, when I publish something using this plugin, I have to go back in and edit the post to add the correct tags which makes the entire situation almost pointless.
December 14th, 2007 at 8:21 am
The tags support would make this plugin the perfect one !!
Thanks for all.

First of all. Wow! No joke, I think this plug in will pay my salary this year in time saved. I owe you big time. But before I give this out to all of my contributors, I am having one error: if I use the bookmarklet before I log in I get the following PHP error:

Then when I close the window and and try to use the bookmarklet, it works perfectly. Any ideas how to fix this?
January 2nd, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Brandon,
Does that only happen when you try and post from that particular site?
January 2nd, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Would you like me to try a few different websites? I did a few tests, and for me this came up whenever I had to log in to wordpress first. So, all other sites allowed the bookmarklet to work once I’d logged in to wordpress. Let me know if I can give you any other info to help troubleshoot this.

I was receiving similar errors after I upgraded to 2.3. After I updated all my plugins, the errors went away.
February 2nd, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Hi, I wanted my contributors to be able to post using quickpost, but I didn’t want them to be able to post directly to the front page until the post has been approved by an editor. The current quickpost publishes any post immediately, but if you’d like to save a draft instead, just change the line 61 in quickpost.php
original line
$quick['post_status']=”publish”;
new line
$quick['post_status']=”draft”;
This is a pretty quick fix if you’re wanting to do something lie this.

February 7th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Hello,
I’m having a bit of trouble with the QuickPost-it link with Safari. It seems to work fine with links and pictures, but I get an error with quotes. After pressing the Create Quote button, I get the “post is saved” dialogue box. If I click cancel, the window closes, but the post never shows up. If I click OK to go to the post, it takes me directly to wp-content/plugins/quickpost/quickpost.php?action=post and I get the same dialogue box again. If I click OK at that point, I go back to wp-content/plugins/quickpost/quickpost.php?action=post, and if I click cancel, it closes the tab. This is on OS X 10.5.1 with Safari 3.0.4.
Great plugin, though.

1 - This seems to happen whether I have rich text editing on or not
2 - It also happens in Firefox, not just Safari

I was getting the same ‘Not Acceptable’ error that Rich was experiencing with Flickr when trying to post from BBC pages. I tracked it down to a question mark being used in the URL of an image on each of the pages, encoding it seems to work for the BBC pages, but not for the Flickr pages. A bit more investigation shows that Flickr also has hash and at symbols that cause problems.
Replacing the symbols with a random piece of text and then swapping them back in quickpost.php seems to work.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:26 am
Nice plugin, thanks.
February 19th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
There’s a problem with 0.7. The settings won’t save and the posting page is all messy.
February 19th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Just wanted to say thanks for this.
And also add that the problem with posts not being created may be a security feature in either wordpress (akismet?) or php(?) because I could not post a youtube video that had Explicit in the title. I went to a version without Explicit in the title and it posted no problem.

I have, however, noticed a small issue: If there is a single-quote in the content of the post it throws an error when I try to submit the post form. Here’s a screenshot of the error message (i was unable to copy/paste)

I like this kind of quick and easy posting
Wordpress is a bit too uncomfortable in its 2.x version ..

Quality wp information always much appreciated.! thanks
March 7th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
All my posts in my new blog are made with the help of Quick Post! Thank you!
One suggestion: It will be great to make a browser button, too, as an alternative to the bookmarklet. Like the buttons of Del.icio.us and Ma.gnolia. I know of many people who prefer to have a button left to their address bar.
Once again - great job! Congratulations and many thanks!

I had the problem with posts not being created.. I found SQL errors in my logs referring to SQL statements with quotation marks.. solved by enabling magic_quotes_gpc in .htaccess.

@David: thanks so much! That’s just what I was looking for. Legend!

Thanks. Just set up a new WP install and used your Plugin with no errors or installation problems.
Thanks.

Very nice blog. Congrats.
March 26th, 2008 at 5:39 am
Love the plugin. Thanks to brandon for the draft tip, just implemented it.
Curious if it’s possible to select more than one image for a single post?
March 26th, 2008 at 7:14 am
There isn’t currently a way. I want to add the ability to upload photos but haven’t thought about allowing multiple pictures selection.
March 27th, 2008 at 11:21 am
I’ve frequently enjoyed using your quick post plugin until recently, when my posts no longer appeared. I’ve tried four times now, and each time I’m directed to a blank screen and my blog is not updated. I’m using wordpress v2.3.3 and Quick Post v0.7. Anyone else have this problem?
March 30th, 2008 at 10:40 am
@endlesstee
Yes, just started having this problem with 2.3.3. As mentioned above, I made the change Brandon suggested, and thought it night be attributed to that. But maybe not? Just checking in here to see if there was a solution?

Two questions:
1) Will you be updating QuickPost for WordPress 2.5? For the most part QuickPost seems to work fine, though videos seem to break. I always need to sign into my 2.5 installation and re-embed the video code.
2) Are you accepting donations for this plug-in?
April 1st, 2008 at 8:01 am
David, I am going to update QP for 2.5. I have done some preliminary testing and need to make minor modifications.
No, I do not accept donations although I appreciate the thought.

April 2nd, 2008 at 5:14 am
Sorry, it is not compatible with Drupal.

Hi Josh,
Do you make other plugins? Am looking for a directory/exchange links plugin….Love the horse head BTW

April 2nd, 2008 at 10:50 am
Paul, I only have one other plugin that copies categories to tags; http://www.radicalbehavior.com/copy-categories-to-tags-the-plugin/
Have you checked http://extend.wordpress.org. There are a ton of plugins there.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:12 am
I just found the plugin today after revisiting wordpress (just installed 2.5) after using tumblr for a few months and your bookmarklet takes everything I loved about tumblr and combines it with the awesomeness that is wordpress. I’m looking forward to the 2.5 release (I noticed it works on some pages but not others) and just wanted to say thanks.

I’ve posted an update on the status of the plugin here: http://blog.twelvehorses.com/blog/update-on-quick-post-wordpress-plugin/
April 13th, 2008 at 10:39 am
I guess I found a bug in QuickPost 0.7: If the title of my posting contains umlauts (like äöüß), these characters are not stored/rendered in the correct encoding (which is UTF-8), but in what seems to be latin1.
Consequently, most browsers show a “?” instead of those characters when such a posting is displayed.

Hi There. I’m blog hopping….
April 20th, 2008 at 7:51 am
I’m getting an error that I’m trying to figure out when using your plugin. I have the latest version from this site and have updated all my other plug ins also. The quick post plug in works except for the categories in the pop up. The error I get is:
WordPress database error: [Table 'thephpnuke.t' doesn't exist]
SELECT term_id as term_id, name FROM t, tt WHERE t.term_id = tt.term_id AND taxonomy = ‘category’ ORDER BY name
The mySQL table IS “thephpnuke” - not sure where the “.t” is getting appended. Anyone have any ideas?

Super plugin, thanks a LOT!
One issue in WP 2.5: When I log in with the user role “Editor”, the “Plugins” link appears in the main menu (which it shouldn’t for an Editor). Funny thing, it doesn’t point to the Plugins page, but to “…/wp-admin/quickpost-admin.php” which then causes a 404.
Please keep it up!
Caspar

This must be the most useful plugin ever if you want to mantain a tumblelog with Wordpress. Thanks a lot!
The only issue I had was with pages that had too much images. Aparently the URL was too long for Apache to handle or something like that, because it would give me an empty page (empty as in size = 0 bytes) when the resulting URL from the bookmarklet was longer than 3000 characters (aprox.). So I took an idea from the Soup bookmarklet (http://www.soup.io) and made a small change in the Quick-Post bookmarklet, which then worked like a charm on pages where it failed before. The patch to apply this change is here: http://capuccinoproductions.110mb.com/quickpost-patch/quickpost-admin.patch.zip. Any question, comment or anything else, please feel free to email me. Thanks again!

Great Plugin.
I’d like to add another voice to the chorus in favor of an option to grab images instead of hotlinking. Some people simply view it as bandwidth theft, no matter what the justification. I don’t agree, but I also don’t want to needlessly piss anyne off. Also, it would be a shame if a great plugin like this that saves time in the short term, inadvertently cost more time down the line fixing down broken links.
June 3rd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
This save me so much time and I’ve been using it for almost a months. Thank you.
June 11th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
I just installed your plugin, the idea for which I truly love - but as someone before me, I get a mysql error instead of the category list:
[Table 'chocolate_blog.t' doesn't exist]
SELECT t.term_id as term_id, name FROM t, tt WHERE t.term_id = tt.term_id AND taxonomy = ‘category’ ORDER BY name
Any ideas how to fix this? (I’m using WP 2.2.3, if that makes a difference.)
June 12th, 2008 at 9:56 am
This is the reason I went to Tumblr in the first place, now upon my return to WP I found this amazing plugin. It was an idea I had, but not the skills to bring to fruition.
One problem, I get a 404 whenever I click on my QuickPost-it button
ideas?
June 13th, 2008 at 1:16 am
Almost missed the download button… Great little plug-in and will come in useful for client blogs as well. Thanks for sharing.
June 29th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Will this work with the latest version, Wordpress 2.5.1? If not, do you have any plans of updating it soon.
June 30th, 2008 at 7:43 am
Hi, I’m at Wordpress 2.5 and I can’t get the plugin to work. The quick post link on my toolbar goes to:
http://www.flux-rad.com/wp-content/plugins/quickpost/quickpost.php?imagez=http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins-plugins/bb-ratings/star.gif,http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins-plugins/bb-ratings/star.gif,http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins-plugins/bb-ratings/star.gif,http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins-plugins/bb-ratings/star.gif,http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins-plugins/bb-ratings/star.gif,&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwordpress.org%2Fextend%2Fplugins%2Fwordpress-related-posts%2F&t=WordPress%20%E2%80%BA%20Wordpress%20Related%20Posts%20Plugin%20%C2%AB%20WordPress%20Plugins&s=
And that is a dead link. Any pointers?
June 30th, 2008 at 7:44 am
Trying this doesn’t work either, sadly: http://flux-rad.com/wp-content/plugins/quickpost/quickpost.php
July 8th, 2008 at 6:49 am
Please, I really really want to use this! I get a 404 every time I use the bookmark except when I use on my own logged in wordpress page.
Am I missing some sort of setting?

(please delete above - tried posting HTML code - now using entities)
Tried to quickpost this:
http://11.media.tumblr.com/2m8BXUfrik3y5ec8y8MX8Z7uo1_500.jpg
1) It thinks it is a text/link - not a photo (does it look for file extensions? jpg, gif png, etc?)
2) When I post as Photo it mangles the code:
<p><a href="http://11.media.tumblr.com/2m8BXUfrik3y5ec8y8MX8Z7uo1_500.jpg" target="_new"><img src="" style="float:left;padding:5px;"></a><br clear="all">
