Relationships in a 2.0 World

I hear many techies asking what the difference between web 1.0 and web 2.0 is.  They are trying to find what technologies let to this new terminology…things like AJAX, CSS, web services, design with rounded corners and large fonts.  The true thing that differentiates these two worlds are relationships.  Instead of businesses rushing to post up their marketing speak sites and their nifty eCommerce engines - never mind the lack of business plans - businesses are putting up sites that allows them to be the facilitators.  Instead of users and visitors they have audiences and fans.

Greg Balanko-Dickson has a great post over at Business Performance Coaching outlining the anatomy of a web 2.0 relationship.  He does a great job of breaking out how each generation differs in their use of computers and how this relates to their online activity.  I think he nails it when he says:

"I purposely have not used the word ‘marketing’ because in the
Relationship 2.0 context it is less about pushing out your message as
opposed to having or facilitating discussions."

Hi Josh, I came over from Greg’s conversation to see what you had to add. “Marketing speak sites and … nifty eCommerce engines” sums the ol’ Web 1/0 business strategy pretty well. Of course this is all somewhat theoretical, but I think there are numbers out there to back up these general points of demarcation between 1.0 and 2.0.
